Yes, quite a bit. In our body Oxygen is essential and oxidative stress is destructive.
The cells in your body use oxygen to break down sugars to produce energy in a process called cellular respiration. The energy produced allows our body to fight infection, maintain or strengthen soft tissues and bones, repair damage and maintain our core body temperature to name just a few of the body activities that require Oxygen.
Oxidation in the body or oxidative stress is where the oxygen molecule transforms into having an uneven number of electrons called a Free Radical (FR). A FR is unstable and seeks to react with other molecules to become more stable. FR can cause tissue damage while trying to become more stable and is a key feature of diseases like cancer, diabetes atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases.
Therefore, Oxygen is vital, and FR (oxidative stress) is to be avoided. Causes of FR are SAD (Standard American Diet), radiation, environmental toxins, and stress. Antioxidants are scavengers of FR and should be consumed on a regular basis to prevent tissue damage. Antioxidant supplements are Ginger, Turmeric and Vitamin C. Foods sources of Antioxidants include Fish, Fruits, and Beans.
I now have a blood test available in my office that allows you to measure (monitor) oxidative stress as well as inflammation, blood sugar and Insulin Resistance. If you are interested, please contact me at drguyp@gmail.com or ask me about on your next visit.
